notes | I was wondering if anyone might be able to help out with regard to a Painted Bunting which we had in our garden. We don't have Painted Buntings in the UK so it obviously was a surprise. We live in Flamborough which is on the East Coast of the UK. The bird was seen to be banded and obviously presumed to be an escape. The best I can do with the band details are as per the attached photos. The numbers 883 can be seen (read upwards, as in the 8 is nearest the foot and the 3 nearest the knee) and then from other photos taken by a neighbour it also shows the numbers 29 over 17. These numbers being aligned as they would normally i.e at right angles to the 883. I have since been told that the 29 is actually 2.9 (which can be seen on the band when looking closer) and this is the size of the band. The 17 part is the year. Another part of the band appears to be either BOF or possibly 8OF, again aligned upwards the same as the 883. From the bits of information I have up to now the thoughts are that the bird may have been bred in Belgium and then purchased by a bird fancier here in the UK but that isn't definite so I thought I would try in different areas. I did see that the band isn't a 'split' one but is a solid type which I presume indicates that the band was fitted while the bird was still small enough to allow this to be done. I have 3 photos showing the ring from various angles but it appears that I can only submit one of them here. If you need the others then please get in touch and I will supply them. Best wishes, Dave Simmonite. |
